9 - 15 Mar - Learn With Joy and Not With Sorrow - Jacob 1 - 4

Jacob 1 - That We Might Persuade Them to Come Unto Christ I'm taking an online economics class right now, which prompted me to think of the definition of economics in the context of the scriptures. Economics is the study of the allocation of scarce resources. In the case of Nephi and his successor Jacob, the plates upon which they engraved their record was a scarce resource. They were costly to make and difficult to engrave, and instilling a tradition of passing them through generations was surely cumbersome.  Recognizing the great importance of spiritual things and the challenge of maintaining records, Nephi instructed Jacob to prioritize religious instruction saying, " if there were preaching which was sacred, or revelation which was great, or prophesying, that I should engraven the heads of them upon these plates, and touch upon them as much as it were possible, for Christ’s sake, and for the sake of our people" (Jacob 1:4).   This priority was not only reflecte

Alma 41 - They Are Their Own Judges

Alma concludes by teaching Corianton that we are our own judges and that our happiness or misery in the next life is contingent on our actions in this life. Alma taught, "and thus they stand or fall; for behold, they are their own judges, whether to do good or do evil" (Alma 41:7). Often when we thing of the final judgment, we think of God determining our eternal fate and assigning us to a kingdom of glory. In truth, we are our own judges and self-select based on what we desire most. If we have come to truly desire righteousness, we will be most comfortable among the righteous in the presence of God. If have desired unrighteousness, we will shrink from God's presence, and will be more at home away from the searing glory of God.  In fact,  Alma specifically warned his son Corianton "Do not suppose, because it has been spoken concerning restoration, that ye shall be restored from sin to happiness. Behold, I say unto you, wickedness never was happiness " (Alma

Alma 40 - The Spirits of All Men Are Taken Home to That God Who Gave Them Life

In chapter 40, Alma continued to instruct his youngest son Corianton. It is interesting to compare the main themes of Alma's messages to his three sons.  Helaman 36-37 "That there could be nothing so exquisite and so bitter as were my pains. Yea, and again I say unto you, my son, that on the other hand, there can be nothing so exquisite and sweet as was my joy.  Yea, and from that time even until now, I have labored without ceasing, that I might bring souls unto  repentance " (Alma 36:21, 42)  "Therefore I command you, my son Helaman, that ye be diligent in fulfilling all my words, and that ye be diligent in keeping the commandments of God as they are written" (Alma 37:20).  Shiblon 38 " I trust that I shall have great joy in you, because of your  steadiness  and your faithfulness unto God" (Alma 38:2) Conversion Story (Alma 38:6-9) "As ye have begun to teach the word even so I would that ye should continue to teach; and I would t

Alma 39 - Ye Stand in Need to Be Nourished by Your Brothers

Alma's son Corianton committed serious sexual sin, which kept the people he was called to teach from receiving the gospel. After Alma explained the gravity of this sin to his Son, he encouraged him to repents and seek the counsel and support of his older brothers, " And I command you to take it upon you to counsel with your elder brothers in your undertakings; for behold, thou art in thy youth, and ye stand in need to be nourished by your brothers. And give heed to their counsel" (Alma 39:10). While parents are commanded to instruct their children and are held accountable for their teaching, siblings are not called to a specific stewardship over one another. For example, Alma responded to his responsibility to  "command  thy children to do good, lest they   lead   away the hearts of many people to destruction; therefore I command you, my son, in the fear of God, that ye   refrain   from your iniquities " (Alma 39:12-13).  For siblings, t he scriptures cont

Alma 38 - Bridle All Your Passions, That Ye May Be Filled with Love

After Alma finished offering counsel to his son Heleman, he spoke to his son Shiblom. Alma recounted his conversion story and emphasized the mercy of God in his repentance process. Despite Alma's incredible experiences with an angel of God and a lifelong ministry of preaching the gospel, he wanted his son to know that testimony or true knowledge can come only through the feelings of the Holy Ghost. " Now, my son, I would not that ye should think that I know these  things of myself, but it is the Spirit of God which is in me which maketh these things known unto me; for if I had not been  born of God  I should not have known these things" (Alma 38:6). Alma implies that there are certain things we can only know if we have been born of God.  Since Shiblom was to continue in his calling to preach the gospel, Alma gave him practical advice for being a good missionary. He counseled him to be humble, to work hard, and to not be overbearing. He also instructed him to control

Alma 37 - Counsel with the Lord in All Thy Doings, and He Will Direct Thee for Good

Alma continued to instruct his son Heleman and emphasized the importance of the scriptures. Specifically, he outlined the reasons why God would preserve and pass down the sacred records of his people. " And now, it has hitherto been wisdom in God that these things should be preserved; for behold,  they  have: enlarged  the memory of this people  (Alma 37:8) convinced many of the error of their ways (Alma 37:8) brought them to the  knowledge  of  their God  unto the salvation of their souls (Alma 37:8) brought them unto repentance (Alma 37:9) [brought them] to rejoice in Jesus Christ their Redeemer (Alma 37:9) Enlarged the Memory of This People The scriptures help us recall the myriad ways that God loves and guides his people. In fact, Moroni's main instruction to everyone who reads the Book of Mormon is to ponder on God's love for His children. This is the primary lens through which to view His works and words. Moroni encouraged, "remember how mercifu

Alma 36 - My Mind Caught Hold upon This Thought

Alma spoke to his son Helaman to share his conversion story and testimony of Christ. Alma emphasized that his knowledge of God did not come from the miraculous visions and experiences, but from the feelings of the Spirit.  "And I would not that ye think that I  know  of myself—not of the temporal but of the spiritual, not of the  carnal  mind but of God" (Alma 36:4). Alma literally saw and angel, was struck down, repented in a spiritual coma for three days and three nights, and saw a vision of God and His heavenly hosts, yet he attributed his testimony of the gospel to the feelings of the spirit, and not his temporal experiences. Though the angel spake  "as it were the voice of thunder, and the whole earth did  tremble  beneath our feet" it was not as compelling or transformative as the effects of the Spirit (Alma 36:7).  When Alma was confronted and chastised by an angel of God, he was struck down by the weight of his own guilt. He said, " I did remember

Alma 35 - They Did Administer Unto Them According to Their Wants

The majority of the Zoramites rejected the teaching of Alma and Amulek and forced those who believed to leave. These religious refugees fled to the land of Jershon to seek asylum among the people of Ammon. The Zoramites told the people of Ammon not to harbor the believers, and "breathed out many threatenings against them" (Alma 35:9). I am very impressed by the response of the people of Ammon who not only admitted those who were cast out from among the Zoramites, but served them and cared for them. "And now the people of Ammon did not fear [the Zoramites'] words; therefore they did not cast them out, but they did receive all the poor of the Zoramites that came over unto them; and they did nourish them, and did clothe them, and did give unto them lands for their inheritance; and they did administer unto them according to their wants" (Alma 35:9). The spiritual lesson about the treatment of refugees is clear. The people of Ammon were refugees themselves and we

Alma 34 - An Infinite and Eternal Sacrifice

Amulek summarized the teachings of Alma reminding the people that "he hath spoken somewhat unto you to prepare your minds; yea, and he hath exhorted you unto faith and to patience—Yea, even that ye would have so much faith as even to plant the word in your hearts, that ye may try the experiment of its goodness" (Alma 34:3-4).  An Infinite and Eternal Sacrifice  "For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and are lost , and must perish except it be through the atonement" (Alma 34:9). None of us has merit before God to hope for eternal life without the divine assistance of the atonement. Isaiah said it this way, " All we like sheep have gone astray ; we have turned every one to his own way; and the  Lord  hath laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:6).  Humbly ac
